The 100 word challenge is “It is a weekly creative writing challenge for children under 16 years of age. Each week a prompt is given, which can be a picture or a series of individual words and the children can use up to 100 words to write a creative piece. Adding Widgets

The Edublogs Teacher Blogging Challenge has an excellent post on adding widgets written by Sue Waters.

It aims to:

  1. “Explain how widgets are used on class blog.
  2. Introduce you to the commonly used class blog widgets.
  3. Show you how to change widgets and add widgets to your sidebar.”

“What are widgets?

The term widget refers to any tool or content that you add, arrange or remove from the sidebar(s) of your blog — these are the blocks that make up your sidebar.

PhotoGrid

Photogrid a great app for collating photos for your blog.

Best of all it’s FREE.

It saves your collages and videos to the Camera Roll so you can use it with the WordPress app.

You can add text, stickers, filters, borders, frames and lots more.

Photogrid is  very similar to PicCollage.

It regularly updates with new backgrounds, filters, text and stickers free for you to download.

You can create Video Slides with your photos too and these work on the blog perfectly.

You just can’t load the videos via the WordPresss app :(. You will need to use your laptop instead.

Just like Becky we managed to come up with some creative ways to use 100s and 1000s. Our favourite was definitely Giant Freckle Biscuits!

  2. Add a comment to this blog post listing three ways your students could use photogrid in your classroom
  3. Create a grid and a video and embed them on your class blog.

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Make sure the map or Street View image you’d like to embed shows up on the map.
  3. In the top left corner, click [settings – the gear symbol]
  4. Click Share or embed map.
  5. At the top of the box that appears, choose the Embed map tab.
  6. Choose the size you want, then copy the HTML and paste the code into the source code of your website or blog.”

Embedding Youtube Videos

Embedding Youtube Videos using your laptop.

  1. “Open the YouTube video [you wish to insert into your post]
  2. At the top left of the screen, tap the menu icon to open the YouTube menu panel.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Desktop menu item. Tap this to view the desktop site instead of the mobile site.
  4. Underneath the video you should see its title, and some buttons. Click on the Share button.
  5. In the Share form, switch from the “Share” tab to the “Embed” tab.
  6. Copy the HTML.
  7. Open the [blog post you are wishing to embed the youtube video in.
  8. Change from Visual to text]
  9. Paste the HTML you copied into the post.”

Padlets are collaborative online pinboards. They are very easy to create and modify. Once created, comments and images and links to graphs, videos and pdfs can be added by you or your students.

Students do not need to login or register to work together adding to a padlet.

There are a range of privacy settings you can apply.

You can embed your Padlet in your blog or create QR code login sheets to put up around your room.

Use the SCAMPER model to write your own version of one of your favourite fairy tales.

  • S – Substitute. Can you substitute a character with a character from a different story?
  • C – Combine. Can you combine two characters or events into one?
  • A – Add. Can you add in a new character, place or event?
  • M – Magnify, Minify or Modify. What happens if you make a character or object much smaller or larger or change it in an important way? Can you alter the beginning, middle or end of the story or the way the characters act?
  • P – Put to other uses. How else could an object be used? What happens if the characters play different roles or respond to events in different ways?
  • E – Eliminate. What happens if you remove a character, place or event from the story?
  • R – Reverse or Rearrange. How does the story change if you reverse or rearrange the order of events or the roles of the characters?

Use Strip Designer ($3.79) to publish your story.

Remember to include a title and your name and grade.

Hippo Image TextSafe Searching – tips to remember

  • If you can’t find a picture you like in the first 10 rows of your results you will need to refine your search terms. For example change from hippo to baby hippo.
  • Select your search terms very carefully. Beware of words with more than one meaning
  • If images come up that are violent or too sexy or just make you feel yukky in the tummy, press the “home” button and go and tell either your teachers or your parents what has happened. They will be able to help you.

Search Tools

Once you are in Google Images click on search tools to further refine your search.

  • Size – Choose medium or large if you are planning to enlarge the image. This will help prevent your image becoming blurry or pixellated.
  • Colour – This tool allows you to switch between black and white and coloured images.
  • Usage Rules – Always choose “labelled for reuse” if you are planning to use the image online. Remember to include the URL where you found the image and the photographer or artists name.
  • Type – This tool lets you choose between faces, photos, clipart, line drawings and animations.

Saving an image

If you are using Internet Explorer

  • Decide which image you prefer and click to select it.
  • Click view image
  • Press and hold on the image and select save image
  • Remember to copy and paste the URL into your work.

What a great way to start Info Lit…

A little bit of competition and a Scavenger Hunt.

We hope you learnt some new skills and more about the features of your iPad and can put them to good use. We’ve attached a copy of the Scavenger Hunt so you can show your family some of the cool things you’ve learnt.
